HISTORY

June 30, 1922 marks the date that the Neerlandia Co-operative Association was officially incorporated. 87 years have passed since approximately 39 settlers decided to co-operate and start a business that could supply them with the basic necessities of life. We wonder if any of those early settlers ever imagined that the co-operative they started would ever become the thriving business it is today.

Neerlandia Co-operative has grown into a very successful business. Sales currently top the 39 million dollar mark and every year there is a healthy net profit which is paid back to its members. Why has Neerlandia Co-op been successful? There are probably many reasons but three stand out.

  1. First of all, the Lord has blessed the efforts of the people involved in the Neerlandia Co-op. The founding members acknowledged a dependence on the Creator and believed that if man plants and seeds, God will provide the increases. Today also, the Coop needs to conduct its business justly and fairly because we are meant to serve the Lord also in our business activities.
  2. Secondly the Neerlandia Co-op has been successful because of the support of its members. Whether people patronized the Co-op because it was close and convenient, they believed in the principles of co-operation, they wanted to support the local community, the prices were competitive, or because they had a good opportunity of receiving a dividend, member loyalty was crucial to the success of the business. This remains true today. As long as the members take pride in THEIR business, the Neerlandia Co-op stands a good chance to grow and flourish.
  3. Thirdly, the Co-op would not be what it is today without the hard work and dedication of its employees. Whether there was one employee, as there was in 1922 or whether there are 50 employees as there are today, Neerlandia Co-op continues continue to retain top quality staff.
The three reasons for success outlined are certainly not the only factors involved. We feel, however, that if these ingredients remain, the Neerlandia Co-op will be in business for many years to come.
